Lucy had to wonder about Steve

When they started going out they used to meet for coffee in a cafe near where they both worked. Lucy thought it was strange that Steve always paid with his eftpos card. The amount was never more than $10, but he never paid with cash.

Lucy didn’t say anything at first (she didn't want to get off-side with him because she really fancied him).

But after a couple of weeks she couldn’t help herself – she mentioned to Steve that every transaction on his card was costing him 30 cents and that if he used his card three times each day, he was paying $6.30 a week or around $25 a month to his bank that he didn't need to.

Steve thought "Wow, she's really onto it, why didn't I think of that?"

He started getting cash out each week for smaller purchases. This cut down the number of transactions he was using his eftpos card for, so he wasn't paying the bank any more than he had to.
