Cool brand vs. true value?

Luke is 6 and desperately wants a pair of cool brand sneakers. Tyler has got some, and he’s a really fast runner. Luke really wants a pair too.

Luke’s parents Anna and Ben have spoken to other parents who’ve also felt that kids often pressure them for designer brand items. It’s hard to explain to kids in this situation the difference between needs and wants. Trying to make Luke understand that they don’t have limitless money is also often a complex argument.

What Anna and Ben decided to do was talk to Luke about the extra things he could have if he settled on some mainstream shoes rather than the cool brand sneakers. If Luke settled for some mainstream shoes, he could also buy a soccer ball for the same price.

The decision was then up to Luke. The criteria was straightforward - one pair of designer shoes or one pair of mainstream shoes AND a soccer ball. It didn’t take him long to figure out what he wanted.
