Other Government support

In addition to New Zealand Super, you may qualify for some extra government assistance if your income falls below a certain level. This support is provided through Work and Income.

  • A Disability Allowance may be available to help cover the costs associated with having a disability.
  • An Accommodation Supplement may be available to help with the cost of renting, boarding or owning a home. This is a weekly benefit paid to superannuitants and other beneficiaries who spend more than 25% of their income on rent, or 30% of their income on mortgage payments. Contact Work and Income for more information on this supplement.
  • Family Support may be available to those who are caring for dependent children. If you are the full-time carer of a grandchild, you may be entitled to additional support. The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust has some useful information for kinship carers.
  • Funeral Grants may be available to the partner, child, parent or guardian of someone who has died.
  • A Special Needs Grant may be available for one-off or urgent assistance in times of hardship. You may also be entitled to a grant for unforseen costs, such as house repairs or maintenance. But be aware that these grants generally have to be repaid.
  • A Recoverable Assistance Programme Grant helps with necessary costs in an emergency.
  • A Residential Care Subsidy may be available to those who require long-term care in a rest home or hospital. This subsidy is income and asset tested.
  • A Community Services Card can help you with the cost of healthcare.
  • A High User Health Card may be available if you visit the doctor frequently. You can apply for this card through your doctor. If you have high prescription costs you may qualify for a Pharmaceutical Subsidy Card, available through your chemist.

For more information on any of the above contact Work and Income on 0800 552 002.

All superannuitants are entitled to a SuperGold Card. This card is proof that you receive New Zealand Superannuation. It entitles you to discounts offered to seniors by private organisations.
