Managing your nest egg calculator

This calculator lets you explore four different options for spending your nest egg.

The calculator will take the value of your nest egg as at today and show you how much money you could spend each year from now, using each of the options. This is over and above NZ Super, any other regular income you receive and any money you have in your final home.

To see how the calculator works, check out our case study.

If you're not yet semi-retired or retired, but want to see how far your nest egg will go, simply work through the calculators as if you are semi-retired or retired.

  1. Four spending options
Option 1: Spend investment earnings only (preserve nest egg).

Option 3: Spend some for a number of years - you choose.
Option 4: Spend all, but spend less each year (nest egg + earnings).

  2. Semi-retired or retired
Retirement means different things to different people. For many, it's the time when they are no longer working at all.

Nowadays, with people living longer, healthier lives, many choose to spend a number of years reducing their hours at work. The transition into retirement can span 10 years or more.

Sorted 60plus refers to this transition phase as semi-retired.
