If you’re a TV or radio star, you’re rolling in it and don’t need to worry about money – right?
Not so – this New Year we asked some top talent to share what works for them when it comes to getting sorted, and for Kerre Woodham, Oliver Driver and Carly Flynn, it’s all pretty down to earth.

Kerre Woodham – radio host, columnist and author – thinks we should all listen to her Dad, who was a bank manager for years:
"He told me to start a savings plan as soon as I got my first job in radio way back in the eighties. Of course, I ignored him. There were shoes and handbags to buy, champagne to drink – and I bitterly regret not listening to him. Even ten dollars a week would have added up to something substantial."
"Now I’m trying to convince my daughter of the wisdom of this advice …"

Oliver Driver, TV3 Sunrise host and star of Under the Mountain also has a lesson from his Dad:
"My father taught me ‘never have hire purchase, don’t buy anything you can’t afford’."
"To save for what I want, I have two separate bank accounts – one that I do almost all my banking through, and another savings account in a different bank, with no card and no cheque book. Money goes in there automatically, I don’t see it on a daily basis, I can’t withdraw it, it’s like it doesn’t exist. If I want to pull it out, I have to go into the bank and withdraw it, so that’s another big stopping point, I can’t just transfer it electronically. It’s a great feeling of satisfaction when you can go in and pay for something all at once."

Carly Flynn, Oliver’s co-host on TV3 Sunrise, is also a great believer
in putting your savings away by direct debit as soon as you get paid.
"I also set up direct debits to pay my bills automatically, on the day I get paid. So if you get paid on the 16th, then everything that has to be paid and your savings go out on the 16th, and what’s left on the 17th is what you have to spend."
"I also try to have cash in my wallet rather than relying on the eftpos card. With eftpos it’s easy to spend $20 here and there and not notice, but if it’s cash and you can see you’re running short you might think twice about having the second coffee."
Carly was surprised to find her money personality is ‘sound controller’
"I love talking about sticking to a budget and I do the accounts, but in reality I’m often as broke as everyone else. "
