If you haven’t done your Christmas shopping yet, don’t panic. Last minute shopping can lead to impulse decisions and a big credit card bill, which you might still be paying off in the New Year.

To avoid waking up to a mountain of Christmas dumb debt in 2012, follow these handy tips:

  • Take some time to make a plan before hitting the shops - make a budget for presents, think about who you need to buy for, what they might like and set a spending limit for each person.

  • Making a list and taking it with you will help you stick to your plan. This goes for the Christmas grocery shop as well. Planning what you’ll put in your trolley before you get to the supermarket will help you stay away from temptation – and avoid a shock at the checkout.

  • Looking online can save you time – it’s a quick way to compare prices between stores Some sites offer free delivery – but check they can get the goods to you in time! Make sure it’s a reputable site and check out the return policy before you buy.

  • If you find yourself getting out your credit card, make sure you can pay it off within the interest-free period before you start swiping.

  • If you have trouble avoiding credit card temptation, try leaving your card at home.

  • If you’re struggling to stick to your gift spending plan, you could try withdrawing the amount you’ve budgeted for, and only spending that cash.

  • Make the most of shops offering free gift-wrapping – it’s one less thing to think about.

  • While it might be a cliché, at Christmas it really is the thought that counts. Some delicious home baking, or your services as a gardener or babysitter may be as appreciated as an expensive gift.

Christmas doesn’t have to be expensive to be a fantastic day for the whole family. It’s about making the most of what you’ve got, and celebrating with those you care about.

Merry Christmas from the Sorted team. See you again in 2012!
