At Sorted when we talk about managing your money we usually mention things like budgeting, saving, investing… but one thing we haven’t talked much about is giving.
Giving to charity is something many Kiwis like to do with whatever money they have to spare. And the good news is that it’s now been made even easier with the introduction of “payroll giving”.
This new scheme allows you to 'give as you earn' by making donations directly from your pay to approved “donee organizations”.
Plus there’s an incentive - for every dollar you donate, you receive a third back as a tax credit in the same pay period.
Donations are made through your employer's payroll system. Note that payroll giving is voluntary, so your employer does have the choice of whether or not to offer the scheme.
You can get more information on how payroll giving works on the Inland Revenue website – including a list of aproved organisations.
