Everyday money tips

Everyday money tips

Tagged with: Budgeting, Personal finance

This week I asked around the office for everyone’s favourite money tips. Here are six of the best (in no particular order).

  • Shop at the supermarket just once a week – and always bring a list (if temptation still gets the better of you, see if you can buy your groceries online).
  • Try a $10-a-bottle wine policy (or set a similar price limit for another luxury item you don’t want to give up!)
  • If you pay your mortgage monthly, change to fortnightly payments of at least half the amount you were paying each month. This will pay off your mortgage faster and save on interest.
  • See if you can change payments for rates, power, phone etc to match your pay periods (this may not save money but it can make the bills easier to budget for).
  • Make coffee at work and save the $4 per day in a holiday fund. Adds up to over $1000 per year (hey, there had to be a coffee tip. There’s ALWAYS a coffee tip!).
  • When hiring tradespeople, ask if you can do any preparation or clean-up work yourself. The less time they spend, the less money you spend.

Do you have a money tip you’d like to share? It doesn’t have to be penny-pinching, just something that helps you manage your money day-to-day.

saving money

My 2 sons and I wanted to quit debt so we could have a holiday. We has little meetings to see how things were going. One strategy was around the power bill Averaging $170 per month. We are passionate about this holiday! we turn everything off at the wall except the fridge and freezer. Shorter showers have helped too. Over 6 months our new average is $96... thats $444 back in the pocket!

Re: saving money

Your best bet is to contact the NZ Federation of Family Budgeting Services. You can find them in the White Pages under Budget Advice Services, or call 0508 BUDGET (0508 283 438). Their service is free and confidential.

No Babysitters Fees

When my children were small a group of our friends used to try to babysit for each other and the favour was always returned. RESULT; you get to go out knowing your children are safe and it's not going to cost you any extra money.

Meal planning

I find that shopping once a week or once a month doesn't matter AS LONG AS I know what meals are going to be made. And make the list from that. I even type up a shopping 'tick list' in the order that items occur in the supermarket.
